the Proprietors or what happens when they don’t put their name on the cover.

Over on George Shiers’ Wacky Comics blog, he had posted a few pages from the comic title “the Halfpenny Comic”, and at the time of the comic’s publication (around the late 1890′s) the publishers never put their name on their title.

This would have caused confusion, as the Harmsworth Press (later the Amalgamated Press) also had put the moniker “the proprietor” on the back page of their comic.

I had previously posted a few strips from my copy of the Halfpenny Comic (published by Trapps, Holmes and Co.), and I only found out the publisher’s name.  An enlargement of the indicia appears below.  Click on the image to see it larger…

Trapps, Holmes and Co.

As I noted, the Harmsworth Press/the Amalgamated Press also used “the Proprietor” on their indicia on their titles.  Here is an example from the back page of a 1917 issue of Chuckles.

the Proprietors No. 2 or the Harmsworth Press/the Amalgamated Press.

I’ll post a few strips from Chuckles down the track.
